Wildlife Overpass - Caloundra Road.

MRWL was responsible for stopping the bulldozers from running over a population of the endangered wallum froglet and Christmas Bells along Caloundra Road.

Previously, a year before this the roadside was burned to produce seed for propagaton.

MRWl and Main Roads worked together to move 500sq mtrs of the wallum froglet to a secure area 100 mtrs from their dwelling.  A large machine was brought in which moved 1 x 1mtr sections, half a metre deep so the frogs and the plants could all be moved together.  The area has now been fenced from the road and is doing extremely well.

The Christmas Bells were translocated to the Mooloolah Native Nursery whilst holding up the bulldozers who were desperate to make up time and clear everything.  Christmas bells are loved by the older community of Caloundra - they remember fields of them just before Christmas each year.  Sadly, the burning regime does not happen now and the Christmas Bells are dying out.

Look on our fact sheet page for Christmas Bells.

Our Landcare Nursery is home to over 100,000 native trees, 98% being endemic to the Sunshine Coast Region.  See our plant list on the nursery page.
